Prioritize decentralisation in manifestos – Political Parties urged

Sept. 27, 2016, 12:33 p.m.

The Center for Local Governance Advocacy (CLGA) has urged political parties to prioritise decentralisation in their manifestos.

A statement signed and issued by the acting Executive Director of the Association, Dr Vladimir Antwi Danso, said such decision would help enhance democracy and strengthen local participation in the country's development.

While commending some political parties like the NDC and NPP, for taking bold steps and setting the pace to incorporate local governance and decentralisation into their policies, CLGA urged other parties that are contesting the elections to follow suit.

Meanwhile, a local governance expert and a political economist Dr Eric Oduro Osae have described Ghana's local governance and decentralisation process for the past four years as excellent.

He said there has been continuity in projects and policies over the period.

He however said areas of administrative decentralisation especially with the position of DCEs have had some challenges.

Dr Abdul Gadel who is a member of NDC's National Election Team says the party will initiate the process to implement the Constitutional Review Commissions' Recommendation to elect DCEs.

He said they will look at the process very well and if need be for election, the NDC will go by that.
